No Fees, No Fines, No Bail, No New J*il

October 29, 2018 - October 30, 2018

No Fees, No Fines, No Bail, No New J*il

If you think Halloween is scary, imagine being haunted by system debt in LA County! Come out and help kick off a new campaign to end fees, fines, bail, and new jails in LA County!

On October 29th & 30th, we will be having a convening at Chuco’s and an action in front of the LA County Board of Supervisors. On Monday, October 29th at 9am-5pm, we will have our convening at Chuco’s, 1137 E Redondo Blvd, Inglewood, CA 90302. It will be a day long meeting of education, story sharing, leadership building, and action planning for the campaign.

The next day, Tuesday, October 30th at 9am-1pm, we will kick off the campaign with a Halloween-themed action in front of the LA County Hall of Administration where the BOS meets – 500 W Temple St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

The campaign will build off the momentum of last year’s SB 190, which eliminated fines and fees for youth across the state in the injustice system, to eliminate fines and fees for all people involved with the injustice system in LA County. San Francisco recently eliminated an array of fines and fees for all people in the system. However, residents of LA County are still burdened with enormous debt from numerous fines and fees imposed by the injustice system. LA County operates the largest J*il and probation system in the nation and subsidizes its operation by transferring some of the costs onto the people caught up in its dragnet. LA County is also known for levying some of the highest bails in history, and studies have shown that CA bail amounts are ten times higher than the national average.

The goal of the convening is to educate, empower, and action plan with directly impacted people, community members, and community organizations. The day will begin with a living library where people who have been impacted by system debt will share and document their stories. There will be two workshops – one on fines & fees and another on bail. After that, there will be a debate on abolition vs. reform. The convening will conclude with action planning for the campaign. Breakfast and lunch will be served.

The next day is even more important because we will come together in front of the Hall of Administration in DTLA where the BOS meets and kick off the campaign with a Halloween-themed direct action!! We will meet there at 9am.

We need people who have been impacted by system debt, bail, and/or incarceration and community members to get involved and become leaders of this campaign and the movement!
